A new online platform designed to make Indonesia’s marine conservation strategy more engaging, accessible, and inclusive was launched on October 31, 2025.

Serving as a national communication hub, konservasilaut.id features comprehensive information that enables the public to understand and engage with the Indonesian government’s goal to conserve 30% of its oceans by 2045.

The communications hub contains information on Indonesia’s marine protected areas (MPAs), progress toward conservation targets, potential sites for Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs), and future plans for MPA establishments. It also highlights Indonesia’s rich marine biodiversity, traditions, and coastal tourism destinations, encouraging people to learn more about national conservation efforts while respecting local customs and values.

The online communications hub is being developed by the Coral Triangle Center (CTC), in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and a consortium of non-government organizations comprising WWF Indonesia, Pesisir Lestari, RARE, REKAM Nusantara, and Konservasi Indonesia.

“Conservation information has long been fragmented and difficult to access,” said Rili Djohani, Executive Director of the Coral Triangle Center. “Through konservasilaut.id, we want to make marine conservation knowledge open and inclusive, especially for smaller organizations and coastal communities that often lack the resources to attend conferences or access exclusive publications. We believe that knowledge sharing should be as vast as the ocean.”

The communications hub also aims to engage a younger set of audience in marine conservation efforts by providing resources such as infographics, posters, and downloadable learning tools as well as concise updates and reference data for practitioners, journalists, and policymakers. It also shares information about upcoming events and campaigns that the public can join.

Recognizing the importance of communication in conservation, konservasilaut.id extends its presence to Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, amplifying its messages through short, engaging content tailored for digital audiences. These channels aim to engage younger generations and the wider public using storytelling and visual media to make marine issues more relatable and inspiring.

Collaboration for a Shared Future

The platform also introduces the National MPA OECM Forum, a collaborative online space where stakeholders from government agencies, academia, NGOs, media, and the private sector can connect, share insights, and explore partnerships. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and cooperation among those working to strengthen Indonesia’s marine conservation efforts.

“Our collective mission is to support the effective management of MPAs and OECMs that hold immense potential to strengthen food security, alleviate poverty, and foster sustainable blue economic development,” explained CTC Senior Marine Conservation Adviser, Marthen Welly. “This can only happen if we work together by sharing data, amplifying local knowledge, and engaging the next generation in marine stewardship.”

Through konservasilaut.id and its integrated communication approach, this initiative is fostering a more informed, connected, and collaborative marine conservation community across Indonesia.
