Launch of the Global Coral Portal

www.cbd.int/coral-reefs

The Convention on Biological Diversity launched a Global Coral Portal. The Portal has been developed pursuant to decision XII/23, by which the Conference of the Parties requested the development of a global coral reef portal linked to the website of the Convention and existing global and regional initiatives to facilitate technical collaboration and voluntary information-sharing on all aspects of sustainable management of coral reefs and related ecosystems. The Portal was prepared with financial support from the European Union.

The Portal is available at www.cbd.int/coral-reefs. It aims to:

  • Provide a platform to showcase the efforts and activities of Parties, other Governments and relevant organizations for improved conservation and sustainable use of coral reef ecosystems, in particular through the implementation of the Priority Actions to Achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 10 for Coral Reefs and Closely Associated Ecosystems (https://www.cbd.int/doc/publications/cbd-aichi-target-10-en.pdf), which were adopted by the Conference of the Parties at its twelfth meeting in 2014;
  • Facilitate access to resources and materials to support the efforts of Parties, other Governments and relevant organizations to improve management of coral reefs;
  • Illustrate the linkages between the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the Sustainable Development Goals with respect to coral reefs; and
  • Provide links to various global and regional organizations/initiatives working on coral reef research and management.

Further to notification 2018-080, Parties, other Governments and relevant organizations are invited to to submit information, which can be shared through the Global Coral Portal, on the implementation of the Priority Actions to Achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 10 for Coral Reefs and Closely Associated Ecosystems, or activities that are in line with them.
