ICRI is pleased to announce the release of the 2024 Impact Report! 2024 marked the 30th anniversary of ICRI, a significant milestone that reflects the enduring commitment and dedication to coral reefs since its inception by eight nations at the inaugural Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP1) in 1994.
Throughout 2024, ICRI made crucial strides in addressing the global challenges faced by coral reefs. The report highlights the announcement of the fourth global bleaching event, underscoring the ongoing threats to coral reef ecosystems and the urgent need for accelerated action to protect and conserve them. Additionally, ICRI launched its first-ever Youth Report, which serves as a comprehensive overview of the imperative need to engage youth in conservation efforts to secure a sustainable future for these vital ecosystems. In parallel, ICRI’s operational network, the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), began the data collation process for the seventh Status of Coral Reefs of the World Report, which will offer essential insights into the health of coral reefs worldwide.
ICRI has continued to champion international collaboration, exemplified by the #ForCoral Pavilion, which brought together global leaders, researchers, and conservationists to advance coral reef protection efforts, and held its first General Meeting in the Middle eastern region.
These milestones highlight ICRI’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding coral reefs and engaging a broad range of stakeholders to ensure a future with vibrant, resilient coral reef ecosystems. This is only possible with the dedication of ICRI’s members, partners and supporters, all of whom have been instrumental in achieving positive outcomes and safeguarding coral reefs and their associated ecosystems.
