Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Conference of the Parties
14th – 25th November 2022
Panama City, Panama
On 30 June 2021, the Republic of Panama offered to host the 19th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP19). On 16 July 2021, the Standing Committee warmly accepted the offer from Panama to host CoP19 in November 2022. The Minister of Environment of Panama, Mr. Milciades Concepción, and the CITES Secretary-General signed the Host Country Agreement on 14 September 2021.
This will be the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES held in Central and South America and the Caribbean since CITES came into force on 1 July 1975, but it will be the first held in the region since 2002.
This year’s World Wildlife Conference is being asked to consider stricter trade regulations for nearly six hundred species of animals and plants believed to be under increased threat of extinction from international trade. In what’s being seen as a barometer for the state of the world’s wildlife, just 9 species are being recommended for less restrictive trade regulations. The proposals have been put forward by Parties to the CITES to be reviewed at CoP19 in Panama.
