The Sustainable Blue Economy Conference is the first global conference on the blue economy in Africa. Participants from around the world are coming together in Nairobi on November 26 to 28 to share ideas on how to transition to a blue economy that:

  • Harnesses the  potential of our oceans, seas, lakes and rivers to improve the lives of all, particularly developing states and women and girls
  • Leverages the latest innovations, scientific advances and best practices to build prosperity while conserving our waters for future generations

The conference will promote a blue economy that is, above all, inclusive, sustainable and prosperous.

Why this conference?

  • To help deliver on the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • To harness the potential of the blue economy to create jobs and combat poverty and hunger – globally and in Africa, particularly the small island developing states.
  • To focus on engaging women and youth as critical to the success of a blue economy and our future.
  • To show how economic development and healthy oceans and waters can go hand in hand
  • To capture commitments and practical actions that can be taken today
  • To bring together the players needed to transition to the blue economy – government of all levels and non-governmental organizations (academics, scientists, civil society, business, thought leaders, philanthropists, and innovators)

As a participant, you will

  • Help shape the discussion on the rapidly-evolving concept of the blue economy
  • Hear about the latest innovations in science and cutting-edge technology to ignite blue growth
  • Create new partnerships, that transcend boundaries, with leaders, business people, academics, policymakers and investors from around the world
  • Learn about best practices to implement the blue economy approach
  • Share strategies for transitioning to a blue economy in your own country or region

Questions we will tackle together

  • How do we apply lessons learned in the green economy to the blue economy to ensure sustainable development of our oceans and waters?
  • In a world of competing interests, how do we find the balance between economic growth, environmental stewardship and social inclusion?
  • What role could the financial sector play in investing in a blue future?
  • What data and research do we need to support blue innovation and effective decision-making?
