General information

The “Coral Reefs and People: Honouring Culture and Advancing Conservation Action for the Pacific Islands” Breakfast — co-hosted by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI)Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR), the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), and The Pacific Community (SPC) (TBC) — is a powerful and inclusive moment to unite traditional indigenous, cultural, and community leaders alongside global partners, solution providers and financial supports in celebrating coral reefs and advancing shared action for their protection.

Taking place during the Third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC-3), outside the Blue Zone, the breakfast will pre-launch the GCRMN’s “Status and Trends of Coral Reefs in the Pacific: 1980 – 2023” report in a uniquely culturally grounded and community-led setting. The event will also spotlight the practical implementation of conservation action through GFCR-supported projects across Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and beyond, demonstrating how finance and partnerships can empower Pacific communities to steward their reef heritage.

By blending ceremony, storytelling, and solution-sharing, this event will serve as a call to action by honouring coral reefs not only as ecosystems under threat but as living legacies at the centre of Pacific resilience and leadership.
