Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s position statement on marine debris

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority is calling for collective regional, national and international action to reduce the impacts of marine debris on the Great Barrier Reef. In March, the Authority released its position statement on marine debris, identifying it as one of the major threats to the natural wonder that is the Great Barrier Reef.

The statement explains why marine debris is a serious threat, how it effects the environmental, cultural and economic assets of the Great Barrier Reef, and outlines a suite of actions which can be adopted by government, community and industry to address the impacts of marine debris.
The Authority encourages individuals and organisations to adopt this position and take action to minimise the impacts of marine debris. The Authority promoted awareness of the issue across its social media channels during #MarineDebrisMarch. This included sharing tips to reduce rubbish and showcasing local champions helping to rid the Reef of marine debris.
