Legislative & Regulatory Mechanisms for the Protection of Coral Reefs and Associated Ecosystems

Studies supported by the Government of Sweden & Principality of Monaco

This work started in the context of the implementation of the ICRI Plan of Action 2018-2020, and more particularly in the frame of the first theme, which was to “promote effective and adaptable solutions to improve the protection of coral reefs”. The aim was to underline good practices in policies related to the protection of coral reefs. Those good practices are to be found in the legislation of the country, but also in the other means of implementation of the several international and regional instruments important in this issue.The purpose of these studies is not to assess and evaluate the efficiency of the action of the country, but instead to highlight the positive elements collected and to identify the potential gaps in implementation of regulatory mechanisms.

To date (2022), six studies, from five countries, have been finalised of which can be downloaded below.

Costa Rica

This study is conducted in the context of the implementation of the ICRI Plan of Action 2018–2021, and more particularly in the frame of the first theme, which is to “promote effective and adaptable solutions to improve the protection of coral reefs”. The aim of this study is to underline good practices of Costa Rica, regarding the direct and indirect protection of coral reefs.

Fiji

This study is conducted in the context of the implementation of the ICRI Plan of Action 2018–2020, and more particularly in the frame of the first theme, which is to “promote effective and adaptable solutions to improve the protection of coral reefs”. The aim of this study is to underline good practices of Fiji, regarding the direct and indirect protection of coral reefs.

France

These studies were conducted in the context of the implementation of the ICRI Plan of Action 2016 – 2018 & 2018-2020, and more particularly in the frame of the first theme, which is to “promote effective and adaptable solutions to improve the protection of coral reefs”. Its aim is to underline good practices of the country, which is a pilot country in this project, as regards the direct and indirect protection of coral reefs.

Japan

This study is conducted in the context of the implementation of the ICRI Plan of Action 2018–2021, and more particularly in the frame of the first theme, which is to “promote effective and adaptable solutions to improve the protection of coral reefs”. The aim of this study is to underline good practices of Japan, regarding the direct and indirect protection of coral reefs.

Seychelles

This study is conducted in the context of the implementation of the ICRI Plan of Action 2018–2020, and more particularly in the frame of the first theme, which is to “promote effective and adaptable solutions to improve the protection of coral reefs”. The aim of this study is to underline good practices of Seychelles, regarding the direct and indirect protection of coral reefs.
