Member Type Regional Intergovernmental Organization or Regional Sea
European Union
The European Union and its 27 Member States joined ICRI in 2021.
The EU has a long-standing and strong experience in the sustainable management of fisheries, including the protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems, as well as a robust internal environmental legislation resulting in the world’s highest environment standards.
It also provides support to many coral-related initiatives in specific regions of the world like its overseas territories and outermost regions.
In the field of research and innovation, the EU has an impressive portfolio of projects related to coral protection and management. These projects inform European policy-making but also feed into international assessments such as the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
