The Port Honduras Marine Reserve (PHMR), located in southern Belize, was established in 2000 in order to protect the physical and biological resources of Port Honduras through monitoring, surveillance and patrolling, to preserve the value of the area for fisheries and genetic resources, to provide educational programs and opportunities to the surrounding coastal communities and to develop recreational and tourism services that are sustainable, and an alternative to destructive fishing and hunting methods.
