Coral Reefs Marine Protected Areas News

Coral reef events at IMPAC5

Philip Hamilton | Ocean Image Bank

The Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5), which will take place in Vancouver, Canada, and online in a hybrid format, 3-9 February 2023, is a global forum that brings together ocean conservation professionals and high-level officials to inform, inspire and act on marine protected areas.

A wide range of events related to tropical coral reefs will be held during IMPAC5. This document collates all relevant events #ForCoral.

All events are accessible to registered participants in person and virtually – in-person locations are given for each event, and virtual access will be given to registered participants. While most events will be held in English, simultaneous interpretation services will be available in French and English for select sessions.

If you are hosting, or are aware of, an event relating to coral reefs that is not featured below, please contact us here.

This page is updated regularly as events are confirmed – the official draft programming of IMPAC5 can be viewed here (last update: 27/01/2023).

In this workshop, we will demonstrate how the Allen Coral Atlas can support MPAs from their creation to data-driven management across different scales in the tropics. The free Atlas platform includes the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) data layer to overlay where MPAs exist, allowing for cross agency and public coordination to communicate which habitats are protected and which environmentally vulnerable ecosystems are most susceptible to loss. Come with your laptop ready for hands-on activities and demos, understand how we combine satellite technology and coral reef science, and how to remotely monitor MPAs.
