The 2023 Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy Launches the “Ocean Award” focusing on Coral Reefs with the International Coral Reef Initiative.

24th April 2023 – The fourth edition of the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy, one of Portugal’s flagship sailing events, will unfold in the bay of Cascais from 7th – 9th of July 2023, with a record six classes across a variety of popular boats.

Established in 2020 to help raise funds for marine conservation, the entry fees for the sustainability-focused regatta are donated to ocean health projects by title sponsor the Mirpuri Foundation. And until the 8th of June 2023, all entry fees will also be sponsored by the Foundation. The event is also single-use plastic-free sustainable with all entry fees donated to ocean health projects.

In addition to the numerous class trophies for racing, the prestigious Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award will be presented, for the third time, to companies or individuals who present a scientific project that has a beneficial impact on ocean health. This year, awarded in partnership with the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI), the Ocean Award invites companies and individuals to showcase their innovative, impactful, and ocean-positive solutions for coral reefs.

Coral reefs have declined at alarming rates in recent years. The Status of the World’s Coral Reefs 2020 report by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network demonstrated that 14% of coral on the world’s coral reefs was lost between 2009 and 2018. And current predictions indicate this loss will continued, with the latest report from the IPCC estimating that a +1.5°C increase in global temperature above pre-industrial levels could lead to a 70-90 per cent decline in coral reef cover.

Faced with a wide range of anthropogenic-induced threats at global and local scale, coral reefs require urgent action to ensure their survival.

The Ocean Award encourages companies and individuals to submit a scientific poster by 2nd June 2023 (see poster for details) that will be judged by an esteemed panel of sustainability and coral reef experts, including the Mirpuri Foundation and the International Coral Reef Initiative. The winning poster will receive a trophy and prize of €5,000.00 as recognition for the excellent contribution for a better world. The best posters will also be exhibited at the 2023 edition of the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy – providing the opportunity to receive global recognition and exposure for exemplary environmental work.

To apply, submit your poster in A2 format (pdf, jpeg, or tiff (300dpi) by 2nd June 2023 to [email protected]
