UNEP-WCMC Relaunches Global Coral Disease Database

3 November 2010: The UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) has relaunched the Global Coral Disease Database (GCDD), an online database for coral disease information, providing interactive maps and dynamic statistics of world-wide coral disease distribution.

According to UNEP-WCMC, the database contains over 8500 separate disease records, and is user-driven. Established in 2000 by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and UNEP-WCMC, the database was re-assessed and redesigned in light of the information needs and priorities of researchers, practitioners and managers working with coral disease, and was launched in Apia, Samoa, at the 25th General Meeting of the International Coral Reef Initiative, which convened from 8-12 November 2010.
