Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO)
Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO) was initiated in 1999 as a direct response to the El-Niño related mass bleaching and mortality of corals in the Indian Ocean in 1998, focusing in the Western Indian Ocean with early work in South Asia and periodic work in the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden. CORDIO has supported the coral reef networks in the region under the Nairobi Convention Coral Reef Task Force and as part of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network. With network partners, in 2021 we completed the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems of coral reefs of the region.
