Aleipata and Safata Marine Protected Areas restoration from the devastations of the 2009 Samoa tsunami

Recipient’s Country: Samoa

Recipient Name: Aleipata and Safata Marine Protected Area Trust Society Inc.

Purpose: The Aleipata and Safata Marine Protected Areas (ASMPAs) are Samoa’s only two disctrict-level marine protected areas located in the south coast of Upolu island. Unfortunately, these important biodiversity areas were severely affected by the 2009 tsunami and there is an urgent need to determine the current recovery status of the coral reef and mangrove ecosystems, re-mark the no-take areas with marker buoys and remove Crown-of-Thorn Starfish. This project will continue these restoration activities and raise awareness within affected coastal communities of adaptive coastal management needs resulting from climate change.

Value of Grant (AUD): 10,000.00

Grant Term: 30/06/2013
