IUCN is a union, bringing together States, government agencies, diverse non-governmental organizations, and scientists in a unique world partnership: over 1400 members and over 15000 scientists, all spread across some 160 countries.

In order to safeguard natural resources at local, regional and global levels, IUCN builds on the strengths of its members, networks, and partners by supporting and enhancing global alliances.

The IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme provides vital linkages for the Union and its members to all IUCN activities that deal with marine issues. This includes projects and initiatives of the Regional offices around the world and the 6 IUCN Commissions.

The Global Marine and Polar Programme works on issues surrounding Global threats and the global commons, from coastal seas to the deep and high seas such as integrated coastal and marine management, marine pollution, marine protected areas, governance of the high seas and deep seabed mining.

Background Information

The IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas – Marine (WCPA – Marine) is the world’s premier network of MPA expertise, with a mission to ‘promote the establishment of a global, representative system of effectively managed and lasting networks of MPAs’.

WCPA-Marine works in partnership with IUCN’s Global Marine and Polar Programme and Global Programme on Protected Areas to:

  • Convene, coordinate and network in order to help governments and others to plan, develop and implement MPAs, MPA networks, and the global system, and integrate them with all other sea and coastal uses and maritime sectors;
  • Ensure better application of the best science, technical and policy advice on MPAs, MPA networks, and the global system;
  • Generate, synthesize and disseminate knowledge on MPAs, often in the form of best practice advice, to a diverse range of players
